HOW IT’S MADE… FROM THE SEA
The Green Lipped Mussels are grown at the north tip of New Zealand's
south island in the Marlborough Sounds. Here, all mussel farming
and processing is strictly controlled by the Ministry of Agriculture
and Fisheries (MAF). This ensures that the mussels conform to
the highest standards.
The mussels are suspended from long lines attached to buoys.
They take about one year to grow to the desired length of 80mm
(3.2 inches). Then they are carefully harvested from dawn to
mid afternoon and hand sorted aboard a harvesting barge. This
is the first stage of quality control.
The mussels are rushed to port to make sure the crucial lipids
are protected. A fully laden harvesting barge can carry up to
80 tons of fresh mussels. Compliance with the standards is administered
by the official Government Inspectors from New Zealand Ministry
of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) who inspect the premises
and monitor the processing operations on a continuing basis.
AT THE PLANT
The Quality of our Green Lipped Mussel product is ensured by
a comprehensive quality control program which is MAF-approved
and inspected. It comprises pre-operation checks; daily compliance
checks of premises, product, processing, and personnel; and
continuous processing control. The processing plant conforms
to the highest quality control standards, which are strictly
regulated and enforced by the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture
on behalf of the United States' FDA and EU Authorities Compliance
with the above regulations enables us to import into the USA.
The mussels are stabilized and freeze dried using a process
that enables the anti-inflammatory compounds to be effectively
captured. To prevent the oxidation of important lipids within
the mussel, this happens within 24 hours of arrival. Freeze
drying, also known as lyophilizing, removes moisture from the
mussel under vacuum without the use of heat. The dried mussel
flesh takes the shape of a thin biscuit with a moisture content
of less than 2%.
The mussel is then ground to a fine powder in a humidity-controlled
room and then packed into heat sealed aluminum bags. The resulting
powder is then shipped to a factory for the extraction of PERNAX’s
active ingredient.
PRODUCT TESTING AND BIO-AVAILABILITY CERTIFICATE
PERNAX products are tested by an independent accredited laboratory
ensuring that all test results are applicable for every production
batch." As PERNAX is at the forefront of new marine extracts,
it is vital to test for the anti-inflammatory and bioactive
properties in our marine extracts. These anti-inflammatory and
bio-active assays are carried out by:
- Wellington School of Medicine
- Industrial Research & Development Ltd.
